Protecting your software’s intellectual property

A few weeks ago I spoke at a seminar in Macquarie University about practical ways to protect your intellectual property as as software vendor. The seminar covered the ins and outs of how software patents work and I was asked to add some practical advice that went beyond patents.

My slides are available for download here  I proposed that there are three areas that a company should focus on that go beyond patents and all the legal stuff…

protecting your code ( obfuscation, security reviews, penetration testing etc)

protecting your team (people are your biggest asset ! hire great people and keep them  engaged!)

know your clients (listen to your clients and deliver new features frequently and get feedback!)

It may sound like common senses but building quality software is all about getting the basics right and then innovating faster than everyone else!
